Description
Pair of early 20th-century American folk art fish spearing decoys, hand carved from wood with original hand-painted surfaces, applied metal fins and inset lead weights. One features a deep green and mustard yellow body with pink-red detailing, while the other has a muted green body with white spots and dark red fins.
Originally used for ice fishing, these weighted decoys were lowered through a hole in the ice and manipulated to mimic a swimming fish, attracting larger fish within range of a spear. Fish decoys are now recognized and collected as a distinctive form of American folk art, particularly associated with the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest.
Wonderful original surface with expected paint loss, oxidation and wear from age and use.
